Based on the novel by Mary Rodgers, it starred the adorable Jody Foster as the daughter and Barbara Harris as her mother. Blessed by top-notch crew and cream-of-the-crop local talent, Director Joanna Henry has made the best of this engaging and heartwarming musical. Yorkey partnered with Kitt on “Next to Normal” and “If/Then,” and both men are stalwarts of the Broadway musical scene. Kitt, best known for his scores of “If/Then,” “Next to Normal,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” and “Jagged Little Pill” draws from a panoply of musical themes and rhythms to create indelibly catchy tunes – the kind you find yourself humming all the way home. Throughout the last few years, she has also assisted with choreography for StageStruck’s productions of Shrek The Musical Jr., Madagascar Jr., Beauty and the Beast Jr., Elf Jr., and Aladdin Jr.Sofia Cruz as Ellie and Kristina Friedgen as Katherine in “Freaky Friday.” (Photo by Matt Liptak)ĪLEXANDRIA, VA – Having seen and loved Disney’s “Freaky Friday” when it premiered at Signature Theatre seven years ago in its debut from film-to-stage production, I have been beside myself to revisit this wonderful musical collaboration between composer Tom Kitt and lyricist Brian Yorkey. Soon after, Rachel began designing different promotional videos, filters, social media posts, and advertisements to reach out to StageStruck’s other audience: The Public. She continued her education at The University of Southern Mississippi, where she graduated with a BSBA. While at MSU, she took several business classes, which sparked her interest in marketing & graphic design. Her love of dance followed her to Starkville, MS where she joined the Mississippi State University Pom Squad. In her spare time, she danced across the southeast, competing in jazz, tap, hip-hop, and contemporary styles. At Oak Grove High School, she was a member of the Golden Spirits Dance Team and the CenterStage! Show Choir. She started dancing when she was just 3 years old, and her passion for the arts continued to grow throughout the years. Rachel has been around music, dancing, and singing for as long as she can remember. She is currently doing music freelance with bands around the Hattiesburg area and has returned to StageStruck to continue teaching what she loves.Ĭhoreographer / Social Media & Website Management Jonathan Yarrington and over the summer made her debut with The Hub City Players. While in school she studied voice under Dr. She has sung in USM’s Southern Chorale and Southern Miss’s acapella group and has done multiple shows with Southern Opera and Musical Theater Program. She was captain of the Sumrall High School award winning A Capella group, Traces Of Blue, was a member of Concert Choir all four years of high school, and was the Assistant Choreographer at StageStruck Performance Studio under the direction of Brenda Shows in 2018/2019. Some of her roles include Fiona in Shrek the Musical, Mazie in Seussical, Marty in Madagascar, Ariel in the Little Mermaid, and many others. She has been performing from a very young age doing shows with StageStruck, Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera, Hattiesburg Community Theater, and other companies around the Pine Belt area. Rachel Claire Stevens is from Sumrall Mississippi. She is perhaps best known as the former host of MIDDAY, a local community affairs and interview television program she hosted for 10 years on the local NBC affiliate where she also served as Marketing Manager. Brenda has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern Mississippi where she studied theatre, voice, radio, television and film and received her teaching certification in English, Reading and Speech. In 2019 she played Mother Superior in Hub City Player’s production of Sister Act. She reprised this role with Laurel Little Theater in 2014. In 1989, she was selected Best Actress by the Mississippi Theatre Association for her portrayal of Daisy in Driving Miss Daisy which she also produced and directed. At Laurel Little Theatre and Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera she has played such quintessential leading ladies as Maria Von Trap, Nellie Forbush, Mame, Dolly Levi and Mama Rose. She went on to play Domina in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Abigail in The Crucible at the University of Southern Mississippi. Watkins High School in Laurel where she performed the leading female roles in T he Sound of Music and Annie Get Your Gun under the direction of Michael Howard.
